Graduate Employability and Social Suitability â⬠MyAssignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about the Graduate Employability and Social Suitability. Answer: Introduction: We often come across many situations where we get stuck into a step at the time of deciding what is right and what is wrong. This creates an ethical dilemma among people. One of the topics that often creates dilemma is the way the workers and staffs are paid in any organisation. According to the ACS as a professional code of conduct, it is the regulations of the society that decide upon the core and ethical value on a field of information and communication (Johnson, 2016). The aim of this report is to analyse the ethical dilemma regarding the payment structure of the IS product and service organisation. It is often seen that employees are given a fixed amount of wage irrespective of their performance and their contribution towards the organisation. This automatically reduces the chances for an individual to earn more which is against the moral and ethical approach of an individual towards the workers. The aim of this report is to consider the situation of the IS sales staffs as they are being paid a minimum wage of $15,000 per annum and they are being paid based only on the number of IS product/service sales they make to external business clients (Walsh, 2017). The situation shall be analysed on the basis on the basis of ethical framework. On the basis of the findings, certain recommendations shall also be given that shall help to improve the situation of the IS sales staffs and they would be eligible to make more money. An ethical framework documents the details that are being followed at the time of making a decision especially when it comes to any kind of ethical dilemma. It is very important for any organisation or any person to come up with an ethical purpose while dealing with people. In terms of professionalism, considering the ethical guidelines becomes more vital (Musavi et al. 2016). Decisions related to the pay structure often become an issue under consideration. Paying the IS employed a minimum wage of $15, 000 per annum has also been under major ethical dilemma. An analysis of the same situation considering the ethical framework shall be done in this respect. Assessment of the situation: It is often found that the major companies pay their sales persons on a commission basis depending on the things that they are being able to sell for the company. In lieu of this, the sales persons are often provided with a minimum wage which happens to be a lesser amount than that should have been offered to them (Ritchie et al., 2014). However, they are continuously being pressurised to make more sales in order to get the minimum amount of wage that they deserve. Thus, the major earning of these people becomes more commissioned based rather than a fixed earning. This automatically creates tremendous pressure on the sales persons because they are the major reasons behind the profit earning of the organisation (Scott, 2016). Therefore, it can be said that the process undertaken for the purpose of motivating the sales person to work more actually creates great burden and pressure on them that can lead to a situation that is more hectic and pressurised for the sales persons. If the situation is considered from the legal perspective, it can be said that the companies are at the right side of the legal guidelines. The companies do not fail to pay the minimum wage to the sales persons. The minimum wage of $15, 000 per annum is paid to the sales person and then the extra amount of money is paid on a commission basis (Friedman and Rizzolo, 2016). However, the minimum wage is much lower than that is expected and this is the reason that the employees continuously remain pressurised to improve their performance and increase the sale of the company. Thus, it can be said that the payment mode that majority of organisations undertake is abided by the law. It is also abide by the ethical values and culture of those related to the decision. It has to be understood that the similar approach is ethical from the perspective of the sales persons as well (Shields and Kaine, 2015). This way the hard work of the people gets paid off and those who do hard work are often comp ensated for their job. In fact, in the recent market and professionalism scenario, it is a common means of keeping the employees boosted and at the same time bringing out the most from them. Alternatives of choices: As it has been evident that the approach that is undertaken to compensate the hard work of the employees is ethical from the perspective of the employers, it often results in certain unethical situation. For instance, as the employees remain aware of the fact that they would be paid more only when they would be able to sale more products, the employees often take unethical approach to sale the products (Al Abri et al. 2014). For instance, they might lie about the quality of the product in order to sell it to the consumers. Thus, there remain huge chances of the fact that the sale person might convince the consumers unethically and give them wrong information about the product. This way, it might happen that the product is sold to consumers but in a wrong way. The long term impact of the same situation might result in the case where the consumers would lose their faith on the company due to the unethical behaviour of the sales person and the company might lose the consumer as well. In addition to this, the overall reputation of the company also degrades and the company has to suffer in the long term. In order to overcome the situation, it is important to think of other better alternatives rather than considering the payment option limited to the commission based. It can be recommended to increase the salary of the employees up to a particular mark that they would be satisfied with it and would no longer have to strive for the extra money (Lazonick, 2014). On the other hand, the employees shall be trained well that they would be able to convince the consumers in the right way and would be able to sell the product considering all the ethical guidelines. In addition to this, in order to keep the employees motivated, they would be rewarded and recognised. It is important to keep a trace of the record of the performance of the employees and depending on the same they could be rewarded and awarded (Doll, 2016). Yearly or half-yearly bonuses and incentives could be the best possible option to compensate the extra earning that the employees are eligible to get if they sell more products for the company. Analysis of the situation: If the proposed approach is undertaken by the major companies, it is expected that the organisations would eventually benefit from the overall scheme. Paying the employees based on commission is a common approach that is undertaken by majority of the organisation. Therefore, it might happen that the employees easily shift from one company to the other due to the extra benefit or more commission that they get in other companies (Dombroski and Lockhart, 2014). However, if the alternative approach is undertaken, it can be more effective to deal with the employees and the consumer. It has to be noted that introducing the training and development activity would definitely incurred a cost to the company but the same can be compensated as well. The companies would not have to pay any kind of incentives to the employees. In addition to this, the training process would also create better opportunity for the companies to teach the employees about how to represent their company to others. Thus, in a way it can be said that the employees would be able to market and promote the company among the consumers as well (Klling, 2014). This way the major stakeholders of the organisation will also be benefitted because they would be able to a number of things by taking a major decision on opting for training option rather than paying the employees on the basis of commission. The idea of the application of the training and development for the purpose of teaching the employees would definitely bring better opportunities for the employers and the employees as well (Islam, 2016). There is no scope of any kind of external influence that would hamper the overall approach undertaken for the purpose of the changing the present scenario of working. Training and development completely depends on individuals perception and there is no scope of the influence of the external factors. Thus, this particular recommendation is indeed the best approach that any organisation might undertake. Application of ethical principles to the decision: The choice that has been made in order to overcome the issue and contradict the ethical dilemma of paying and serving the employees in the right manner is rightly justified. For the application of the same, it is highly recommended that the organisations would undertake certain approach to teach the employees on how to sell a product to the prospected consumers and they shall be guided throughout the process of selling the product. Another important point that can be considered is the betterment of the product (Gordon, 2015). It is highly recommended that the product needs to be developed that the consumers would find it beneficial for them to purchase or get the product. Thus, there also remains the chance that the consumers would be directly attracted towards the particular product and the sales person would not have to suffer or make effort for the purpose selling the same product (Lindberg and Rantatalo, 2017). Training the employees would also create an equal opportunity among the employees. A common scenario that is evident is that at many times it is found that the employees have good sources and they get their products or services delivered to them. Therefore, if an employee does not have proper connection with consumers, it might become difficult for the person to sell the product (Fouch and Chubb, 2017). Therefore, it can be easily said that training would provide the equal opportunity to all the employees to deal with the situation. In addition to this, it has also been proposed that based on the overall performance of the employees, they can be given incentives and bonuses. Action to be undertaken: If the benefits of the overall approach undertaken are considered, it can be said that when the employees are given the opportunity to work in a better way rather than concentrating on increasing the income of the individual, it is expected that they would concentrate in their work more actively and would try to prove their ability and capability to deal with the situation. In fact, there remains the option of increasing the loyalty of the employees towards the particular organisation. It has to be understood that it is not that by only providing monetary grants but an organisation should be responsible for undertaking the other approaches of betterment (Carbone et al. 2015). It can also be said that when the only means of motivation is monetary factor, the employee also tend to look into the perspective of money rather than considering other things like the image of the company or the consumers need and demand. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the organisations should consid er other means of improving the ability of the employees and encouraging them to work with more dedication rather than moving behind money only. In fact if the same approach is undertaken by a particular company, it can help to improve the image of the company as well. The employer can proudly tell about their decision and this can be an approach of attracting good and experienced employees towards the organisation (Blanchard, 2016). This is indeed a different means of serving the employees and the consumers and in the most ethical and moral way. Moreover, the same approach can be easily undertaken by an organisation if certain initiative is undertaken with proper measures. It can be easily said that the approaches that the major companies undertake in order to motivate and boost the employees and pressurise them to sell more products for the company ultimately leads to an unethical situation that creates problem for both the employees and the company as well. It can be said that incentives based on more selling of the product is not the only way of motivating the employees but there are other means as well that an organisation might easily undertake. Of these, training and development is the most prime option that they can approach for because this way the employees shall be able to deal with the situation more appropriately and they would be able to sell the product to the consumers in a rightful way. Although the commission based business is used by many organisations, it definitely creates an ethical dilemma and the same should be considered to be revised in order to create better opportunity for both the employees and the consumers as well. It is e xpected that if the major companies undertake this particular approach, it would be more beneficial to them and the companies would be able to make more profit than the traditional means of encouraging the employees to work hard. Conclusion: A clear and distinct approach towards the commission based payment structure to the employees by the major IS employers has been made. A detailed discussion on the negative impact of the commission based service has been conducted. It has been clearly found that in order to sale more products, the employees are often found to undertake certain steps that ate unethical. In addition to this, those employees who carry out their work in the ethical manner are often found to be at a loss because they ultimately fail to convince the consumers in a right direction and they do not able to sell their product. In addition to this, the employers also pressurise the employees to sell more products just to increase their profitability. This way a clear and significant unethical situation is created that very often lead to the situation that could not get compensated. Keeping these perspectives into consideration it has been proposed that apart from the commission and incentive based program, the employees could be trained to sell their product following the right guidelines. This shall be the right approach that would be ethical and also effective for the major stakeholders of the organisation. It can be said that if the proper approach towards the training and development program and teaching the employees to deal with consumers correctly is taken onto consideration, the organisation can gain better result easily. Compare and Contrast The New World and The General Historie of Virginia
It was an adventure from the point of view of the foreigners who came from England. They wanted to start a new life away from the chaos, confusion, and poverty of their motherland (Woodward, p.145). They succeeded in finding a new world but what was not yet clear is that if they can have a new life in a new settlement that they would have to build from scratch (Oââ¬â¢Sullivan Keuchel, p.7).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Compare and Contrast: The New World and The General Historie of Virginia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In this particular study this particular story is re-told in two different ways. These two versions will be compared side-by-side. The first one is an eyewitness account and primary source of the first wave of English settlers and the second one is a film directed by Terence Malick. The plot structure of Smithââ¬â¢s book contrasted sharply with that of Malickââ¬â¢s movie. Smith wan ted to show an overview of history as it pertains to the creation of an English settlement in Virginia. The author, Captain John Smith was able to do this by providing detailed description of the reasons for setting sail towards an unknown world, risking their lives for something that they are not entirely sure about (Smith, p.40). The film however, did not waste time explaining the rationale of the voyage from England to Virginia because the plot structure focuses on the New World and its impact on the lives of the Englishmen. With regards to the characters the movie cannot afford to spend so much time providing details regarding the other actors. Thus, the movie failed to develop more round characters and this is understandable because of the limitations of the medium used (The New World, p.1). But in the case of Smith he had the freedom to discuss the members of the crew and what they are like and thus providing the readers enough background information to appreciate the actions of the characters in the historical account. The film however focused on John Smith and Pocahontas. The book and the film share the same setting ââ¬â the New World. The author was smitten by the new surroundings. He was like a boy that was given an expensive toy. He could not believe what he saw. Smith had a very realistic view of the New World while the movie version of his character seemed to be a poet allowed to roam free in an enchanted kingdom.Advertising Looking for essay on history? On the other hand the John Smith in the film seemed to have an overly optimistic view of the natives. In the movie John Smith fell in love not only with Pocahontas but also the land and its people. The book may have suggested that John Smith respected the natives but not to the extent that he wanted to be like them. In the movie John Smith expressed his desire to be like them. He did not say it out loud but he expressed it by describing the superiority of their ways in terms of the absence of jealousy and greed. He was amazed at the way the people share everything that they have. The John Smith who wrote the book had a practical view of the land and the people. The author was well aware that the land and the people can swallow him up and his fellow explorers. He did not have the luxury to become culturally sensitive to the New World. His mind was occupied with only one thought and it was the concept of survival. The book was written from the point of view of Captain John Smith and the English settlers. The movie alternates from the point of view of Pocahontas and John Smith. John Smith saw Virginia and the New World from the perspective of an adventurer. He saw the dangers and the excitement but he was unable to fully explore how the natives saw the strangers that landed on their shore. The main difference between the movie and the book is on how the director was able to show how two groups of people collided in one location. The Englishmen saw it as some sort of a land of promise. The natives saw it as their home and the intruders are forcing their way into a territory that belonged to the natives for hundreds or even thousands of years. The book uses symbolisms of power. The Englishmen were superior to the natives. The Englishmen points to their armor, guns, mirrors, compass and other evidence of technological prowess and use it to judge the power and value of the natives. In the book the English settlers acted as if they were entitled to everything that they thought they need to live a successful and happy life in the settlements that they had created. The movie uses different forms of symbolisms depending on whose point of view was the focus of the scene. If the movie takes the point of view of Pocahontas then the symbolis m used is the elements that can be found in nature. In the early part of the movie one can see Pocahontas mimicking the gestures of the wild animals.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Compare and Contrast: The New World and The General Historie of Virginia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This symbolizes freedom and being one with nature. When John Smith was sent as an envoy he was separated from his team and one of the most poignant moments was when he was alone in a swampy area and he was covered in full body armor. However, he was defeated and captured by those who utilized crude technology. This scene symbolizes the fact that the natives had the advantage because they know how to behave in accordance to natural environment. Although Smith had superior arms he could not move freely in knee-deep water. The theme of the book is the chain of events that led to the discovery and colonization of the New World. The t heme of the movie is the clash of two cultures. Pocahontas symbolized the culture of the New World while John Smith epitomized the culture of the foreigners. The theme about the clash of culture did not end there because at the latter part of the movie a co-mingling of identities was achieved. The book had a simple unifying theme and it was just an overview of history from the point of view of the conquerors. Conclusion The book and the movie attempted to tell the story of how Englishmen tried to colonize the New World. The book had a simple approach and it was told from the point of view of a historian and settler. The author described the trials and triumphs of an adventurer forced to leave home to seek fame and fortune abroad. But the film was more complex even if it uses few details regarding the character and setting. It is more complex because it explores the same story from two points of view. Installing Windows Xp Essays
Installing Windows Xp Essays Installing Windows Xp Essay Installing Windows Xp Essay Most everyone in this time and age has a computer. Not all of them are up to par with the demands a computer has to fulfill. On average, a new computer goes out of date around 2 years after being placed into service. This means your computer most likely is already out of date. For some people this means you might have to update your operating system. Since Windows XP is now affordable and a lot of people like it, I will explain to you how to install it on your computer. Before installing Windows XP on your computer you will need to get together a small list of things. Your computer or laptop and the Windows XP compact disk that came with your computer or you bought at your local store. The first thing you need to do is look at your computer specifications to see if it meets the hardware requirements of Windows XP. It is located somewhere on the computer box you purchased or in your instruction manual. Next you need to compare your computerââ¬â¢s hardware specs to the minimum, and or recommended requirements of Windows XP. Your Central Processing Unit (CPU) has to be Pentium (or compatible) 233-megahertz (MHz) or higher; a Pentium II (or compatible) 300-MHz or higher processor is recommended. For your RAM (random access memory) you need 64 megabytes (MB) minimum; 128 MB is recommended; your hard drive needs to have at least 2 gigabytes (GB) free space. For your display, all you need is a video display adapter and monitor with Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) resolution or higher; Super VGA and a Plug and Play monitor are recommended. The next step is to insert your CD and get to your boot menu. You do this by restarting your computer and pressing F8 on your keyboard when your computer is booting up. Then you will have several options in front of you. Choose the one that says ââ¬Å"boot from hard diskâ⬠. Now your computer is loading your Windows XP installation disk. The license agreement will then pop up. Press F8 to agree to it. If you donââ¬â¢t agree to the terms, you will not be able to install the program. Now you will insert your product key, located on the back of your Windows CD paper case, into the place provided. It will then start installing. You will still have some pop-ups asking you questions. The first one will be about a domain user and workgroup. None of this matters for your home computer. Click default settings and click continue. Next will be regional and language options. Look this over to make sure the information you put in is correct. Fill in the Date and time Options. This varies on where you live. Our time zone is Eastern so that is what we will use and then set it to the correct date. The network configuration will appear. Just click next so it stays default. Now your computer will do some setup tasks and the restart. After this your computer will have the operating system Windows XP on it. It feels good to install Windows all by yourself doesnââ¬â¢t it? Now that the installation is complete you will have to connect to the internet for all of the updates. For this consult, your ISP (internet service provider) because it is not a part of the Windows XP installation. But after that is done Iââ¬â¢m sure you will be off playing your computer games, doing homework and poking someone on Facebook very soon.

U.S. and Texas Government Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
U.S. and Texas Government - Essay Example It was thought that by having electors with a better political understanding, the choice of the president would be one to unite all Americans. Presently, for a US presidential candidate to be declared officially as the president, a 270 majority from the electorate college is mandatory. In the past, the Electoral College has denied some candidates the presidency. During the 1824 elections, Andrew Jackson failed on the president bid because, despite winning the popular vote, he only managed less than 50% of the electoral votes. Similarly, Samuel Tilden, during the 1876 elections failed to become president because he did not meet the threshold. Others who faced a similar ordeal were Grover Cleveland and the recent one Al Gore. Currently, the state of Texas has 38 electors while Wyoming has 3. However, seemingly, unfair, this system is fair given the populations of respective states. However, the smaller states are likely to perceive it otherwise. Besides Nebraska and Maine, all the other states use the ââ¬Ëwinner-takes-it-all rule. This rule influences the presidency in the sense that a state can be biased. ââ¬ËSwing statesââ¬â¢ refer to a state that two main political parties share voters almost equally. Presidential elections ought to be reformed in a way that the general electorateââ¬â¢s wish is directly implemented. College educated voters are quite knowledgeable on electoral matters. Conversely, nonvoters tend to know mainly about the candidates, not issues discussed.

Film analysis Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 5
Film analysis - Movie Review Example The film generally highlights Maria Alvarez, who is a fictional character aged 17, showing her routine reality within the society. This paper will seek to analyze the film by evaluating various aspects of planning, as well as other related issues incorporated and used in Maria Full of Grace. The film Maria Full of Grace illustrates several crucial aspects that are involved in global planning, one of which is the immigration issue. In this case, immigration is defined as the movement of people from their countries of origin in order to settle in countries other than their own (LeGates & Stout 131). While immigration is caused by numerous reasons, one of the most prevalent one in the film has to do with poverty. For example, Maria Alvarez emigrates from Bogota in Colombia to New York and is lured to do so by the promise of being a drug peddler and the money that she will get from the business. Immigration has an essential part to play in urban planning, specifically because the influx of persons that the government fails to account for may lead to a crisis of population. Majority of immigrants exert additional pressure on government public facilities, including schools, hospitals, and community centers (LeGates & Stout 132). Moreover, immigration also pressures government institutions as they have to adapt to the new demands of an increasing population due to immigration. In addition, cultural facilities and other institutions are also forced to become more diversified, as well as expand their capacity in order to suit the populationââ¬â¢s needs (Zukin 132). Thus, such influx of immigrants leads to necessary changes in the structure of public institutions in the host country. Immigration is also linked directly to cultural influences as an important factor of planning. Since urban development mainly seeks to control diverse peoples and cultures living in communities around the city, along with the need to ensure maintenance of civility and peace in

The PC Preventive Maintenance Information Technology Essay
The PC Preventive Maintenance Information Technology Essay Preventive maintenance is a routine maintenance actions aimed at the prevention of breakdowns and failures of computer (Weibull, 2007). The main aim of preventive maintenance is to prevent the failure of equipment before it actually occurs. These include tests, measurements, adjustments, and parts replacement, performed particularly to prevent faults from happening. Two types of PC preventive maintenance are planned maintenance and condition based maintenance. Planned maintenance is maintenance that is performed on a regular basis in order to prevent a machine from deteriorating or breaking down. Condition based maintenance is maintenance when need arises. This is when one or more indicators show that equipment performance is deteriorating. Regular maintenance such as cleaning up, backing-up data, removing obsolete programs, Microsoft updates, security updates and defragmentation are precautions one must take while doing preventive maintenance. We require preventive maintenance because it helps to prevent breakdowns, failures, secure data and information of computers. It increases the efficiency and speed of the equipment and it also saves you from spending too much money when the machine breaks down completely and requires a big time repair or a replacement. Preventive maintenance cost lesser than repairs and replacement. Software maintenance and software deployment are software preventive maintenance. Software deployment is all of the activities that make a software system available for use (Wikipedia, 2010). The method consists of several interrelated activities with possible transitions between them and this is done at the producer site or consumer site. Software maintenance is modifying a software product after delivery to remove errors and improve performance. Software upgrade is replacing a software program with a new improved version. Software upgrade can keep the computer more secure, up-to-date, and performing at its best. Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another. Viruses can increase their chances of spreading to other computers by infecting files on a file system that is accessed by another computer. Malware, adware, and spyware programs are computer viruses that can harm the computer. Keeping the computer updated, use of patches, firewall and protected internet access are the safe techniques to keep the PC virus free. Backup is making copies of data on a medium other than your hard disk. Full backup, image backup, selective backup, differential backup and incremental backup are types of computer backup. Full Backup backs up all selected files. Image backup is a backup of an entire hard drive by means of creating its image. An incremental backup backs up only those files created or changed since the last backup. Differential backup contain all files that have changed from the time when the last full backup. Selective backup this when you select specific files and directories to back up. Back up is required in case a file is lost, hard failure or deleting wrong file. By the use of backup you can recover the lost files. Floppy disks, tapes and hard disks drives are types of backup media. Tape is a sequential recording system. Tape drives use magnetic tape to store data and to access data the tape drive must rewind and fast forward to different segments of a tape to retrieve data. Hard disk is a storage device that store programs and data. Hard disks stores data even when the power is off; they do need power to perform read and write functions during usage. Floppy disk is a soft magnetic disk used by computers to store data magnetically. Floppy disks are inexpensive, portable and most computers have the hardware to use them. They have now been outdated by USB flash drives, external hard disk drives, CDs and memory cards. Hardware maintenance is an understanding of how the PC hardware maintenance function should operate and be managed. Hardware plays an important role within a computer and this is why it is very essential for the users to be aware of the need to know some important aspects related to computer hardware maintenance. The users must take necessary actions to avoid the computer from being damaged or protecting the computer components running well as long as possible so that we might not spend too much money too often in order to acquire new computer components. In addition hardware maintenance is taking steps to keep the hardware working properly, for example; cleaning computer hardware, not drinking or eating when using a computer, implementing security hardware and keeping you computer well ventilated. The purpose of preventive maintenance of a PC is to minimize or eliminate expensive repairs. This is done by inspection, testing and reconditioning a system at regular intervals to prevent failures in service or deterioration (Answers.com). When working on a computer always be very careful with Electro- Static Discharge (ESD). ESD occurs when two objects of dissimilar charge come in contact with each other such as your body and a computer component. We require antistatic strap while doing preventive maintenance because it equalizes the electrical potentials between you and the server. The antistatic strap is designed to drain electric charges away and provide safety to the user. Four PC components that require preventive maintenance are keyboard, monitor, mouse and CD-ROM/DVD. Dirty CD-ROM/DVD and floppy drives can cause errors while reading and writing. Floppy disk cleaner and CD lens cleaner should be used. Security and removing dust are PC hardware maintenance tasks. Due to hackers, spyware sources and virus codes spreading on the internet, security on a PC is very important. Antivirus programs, firewall, patches and regular software updates can help to protect the computer from viruses and hackers. Computer hardware gathers dust and debris floating around the air and this dust can cause the computers fan to stop cooling off the computer, resulting in an overheated computer. Regular cleaning of a PC will improve the computers performance. Keyboard may not operate due to various reasons such as wear and tear, heavy usage and accidents such as spilled drinks or exposure to extreme temperatures. Keep drinks away from your keyboard and always handle the computer with extra care. Check the mouse connection on the back of the computer for any signs of wear and tear or any other type of damage. Proper ventilation for the video can help with the moisture problem. In summary, taking good care of the computer is very important. Preventative maintenance allows computers run efficiently and prevents breakdowns or failures. Regular cleaning of different parts of a computer; keyboard, mouse, monitor, case, interior, DVD / CD drives and hard drive can improve system reliability, decrease maintenance costs and can as well save you from buying another computer.

Loyalty and Trust in Mark Twains The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Es
Huckleberry Finn ââ¬â Loyalty and Trust à Huckleberry Finn does not address questions of law as directly as the other novels that we have read. Ostensibly, Huck is torn between disobeying the slavery laws and honoring his conscious.à However, Huck shows a disregard for other laws throughout the story, so I think that his conflict stems not from a belief that one must obey the law because it is the law, or on a social contract theory.à Huck is never overly concerned with the truth or the norms of society, he adheres to the mores of society because of the consequences as opposed to any fundamental acceptance of them or authority.à Unlike Billy Budd, however, Huck does not seem to be influenced by the fear of corporal punishment, as much as he is concerned with the social consequences that would result if his disobedience was discovered.à The choice that Huck eventually makes is deeper than just choosing to accept the social consequences, he is willing to `go to hell' for Jim, rather than betray the loya lty and trust that has grown between them.à à I think that Mark Twain choose an excellent vehicle for the presentation of a sharp, social satire. By letting Huck tell the story, Twain was free to present the ignorance underscoring the mores that were passed onto to children.à Huck interprets the world literally, which starkly contrasts with the romanticism of Tom Sawyer and spiritualism of the widows.à Huck's literalism also allows him more leeway than a third-person narrator can have.à Mark Twain could have presented his criticisms in an essay, or a more sensational, fictional novel; however, he has chosen the most powerful form because the realism of th... ...ppears, because it is possible that Tom's disregard was not based on unintentional, ignorance but rather was intentional and selfish. I will have to re-read Tom Sawyer to consider that question, I remember that was my view the very first time I read the book because I did not read Tom Sawyer first.à I think I changed my mind upon learning that Tom was such a well-known and beloved character, I did not think the audience would accept it.à However, today, I am not sure why I thought the audience's expected acceptance/rejection is indicative of the authors intent. Twain was very dark in his later years, and his use of the dialects, inclusion of the (arrogant, taunting?) notice/explanation (challenge?) and his biting satiric tone indicate that he would not feel constrained by the audiences expectations, and might seek to shock them.à Ã
